This was a great show. My friend lives in Grand Junction, so I was able to hang out with him,
and couch-surf at his place after the show. I also got to meet up with an old friend from college
while I was at the Mesa Theater, so that was lots of fun!
This was the first time I had ever been pulled out of a show for recording. I was upfront in the
second or third row in front of Christopher. Near the end of Soup, a bouncer comes up to me, and
pulls me aside in a hallway at the left-front of the standing area. He turns me over to the head
security guard at the Mesa Theater. He asks the guy who pulled me from the show what the problem was.
He says that, "He's recording this shit with a mic, man!" The head security guard tells me that I
can't do that. I assured him that Blind Melon was cool with taping shows, and then he tells me that he
will go double-check with their road manager. The guy who pulled me from the show let me return to the audience
while the head security guard checked on the official word from the tour manager. About one song later,
the head security guard approached me in the crowd, and told me I was good-to-go. I guess it was a learning
experience on how to stay calm with the staff of a venue even if they weren't aware of the band's taping policy.
"Time" 03-29-2008 Grand Junction., CO Mesa Theater
My friend and I went behind the Mesa Theater after the show to see if we could find any band members
to talk with. Brad walked out not too long after we showed up, and he talked with us for about 15 minutes.
He was super cool and down-to-earth. He seemed to really like Grand Junction. He said several times that
it seemed like a really cool town. I bet he was looking at all of the mesas and buttes from a hang-glider's
perspective.
Brad signed my copy of Soup and Mercy! When he saw the Abandon Jalopy CD, he yelled out,
"AJ!" I think he was excited to see a fan of the Abandon Jalopy album. As I am standing there talking
with Brad, the roadies are moving tourcases into the pull-behind on the bus. That's when I notice a tourcase
that does not say "Blind Melon" on it. This particular case was yellow with black lettering and it said,
"Unified Theory." I pointed that out, and Brad was says, "Yeah I'm still using some of those cases from
the Unified Theory days." That kicks ass!
Rogers walked out of the venue a little bit later, and we got to talk with him for ten minutes or so.
He seemed to have enjoyed the Colorado shows from what I could tell. I know I had been badgering them
ever since they started touring, about when they would perform in Colorado. Well, it finally happened,
and I couldn't be happier about it all. THis has been a dream come true. If you had asked me two years
if Blind Melon would make a new album, start touring, and return to Colorado for a few shows, I would not
have believed it. But it's true and it kicks ass!!! Blind Melon rocked the ROcky Mountains!
Again, I would like to say thanks to Rogers for being so cool, and getting me into so many shows! You rule!
